Instagram has announced figures for the most-followed accounts of 2016, and depending how closely you follow pop culture, the results may surprise you.

Superstar Selena Gomez takes the top spot with 103 million followers, eclipsing Taylor Swift, who sits in second place with 94.1 million followers. Gomez also claims an astounding eight of the 10 most-liked photos of 2016, with soccer icon Cristiano Ronaldo grabbing the other two spots there. If that weren't enough, Gomez also experienced the largest audience growth this year, gaining 50 million followers.

Women dominated the chart, holding eight of the top 10 positions. Cristiano Ronaldo (No. 6) and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (No. 8) were the only men to crack the top 10. Travel photos were extremely popular amongst everyone in the top 10, as were selfies taken with other celebrities.
